I owe a lot of my knowledge not only to experience but research. I think there is a lot to say about a personal trainer who is always trying to advance his/her knowledge and stay ahead of the game. With that being said here is a little tid bit of info that I have come across about healthy food combining.
Tomatoes and Avocadoes:
Not only are they amazing with a little Old Bay sprinkled on top but they are packed with antioxidants that are known to lower the risk of cancer and promote cardiovascular health. I’m talking about the tomato. Yup this delicious fruit is packed with some pretty awesome stuff.
On the other hand we have the Avocado, my go-to source for some of the healthiest fats and other nutrients around. These things are packed with some great stuff. Although they have a lot of different things that promote health, what I want to focus on with Avocadoes is the source of fats.
Now that you have the low down on them both here is where it gets pretty cool…..
There is an antioxidant in tomatoes called LYCOPENE which is responsible for the fight against cancer and cardiovascular health. The availability of fat from the avocado makes the absorption of the antioxidants in the tomatoes more efficient/effective. This means the next time you make your home made guacamole be sure to add the tomatoes!! These antioxidants are better absorbed with the presence of some kind of fat. (Avocados, olive oil etc)
Now as far as salad dressings go, the fats in the heavier dressings promote absorption of the antioxidants found in leafy green veggies. These are the guys that are responsible for lowering the risk of eye disease.
The fact that this can promote good eye health stood out the most to me considering almost everyone in my family wears glasses of some sort….except me! Maybe it’s from all the years growing up with Paul Newman dressing on the table…who knows
Eat your greens!!
